mr leon bird | photographer
One of the more unique features of Freshwater Bay Primary School is the set of large photographic panels created by photographer, Leon Bird. The panel series, titled “The Essence”, represents the school’s identity and character.
Mr Bird drew upon the school’s vision and values to produce the series for the internal spaces of the refurbished school.
percent for art scheme
The panels were created as a result of the Western Australian State Government Percent for Art Scheme . This scheme was established in 1989 with two key objectives identified by the Ministerial Taskforce on Public Art (1988-1997):
- To improve the quality of the built environment and the value of public facilities.
- To create opportunities for Western Australian artists through the commissioning of public artworks using an allocation of a percentage (up to one per cent) of the estimated total cost of the State’s capital works and major infrastructure projects.
Participation of students and staff was fundamental in the success of this project and was a key to distilling the spirit and goals of Freshwater Bay Primary School. We are very grateful to Mr Bird for creating such a beautiful visualisation of the school’s essence..
