From 2015, the Australian Curriculum English, Mathematics, Science and History will be introduced in all school across the country. This means that you can expect your children to have the same education framework in these subjects, regardless of where you live now, where you live in the future, or what school your children attend. It also means that if you move interstate, your children will have minimal disruption to their studies.
what is the australian curriculum?
The Australian Curriculum sets out the core knowledge and skills that every child must learn in school. The new curriculum:
- includes what will be taught in each subject
- highlights the quality of learning all children should receive
- acknowledges the challenges that continue to shape learning in Australia, including evolving technologies and resources.
HOW IS IT IMPLEMENTED IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA?
In Western Australia, the School Curriculum and Standards Authority governs the implementation of the Australian Curriculum. The Authority requires schools to implement the Australian Curriculum in English, Mathematics, Science and History by the end of Semester 1, 2015.
West Australian schools will teach the content of the Australian curriculum in these four core learning areas and will use the national achievement standards to assess student achievement.
Teachers will still have the flexibility to cater for the diverse learning needs of each of their students, and to meet their school’s context – but the aim is to prepare all children nationally with the skills they need to become resilient, well-rounded high achievers with a keen social conscience and a desire to contribute to a dynamic and changing society.
Schools will teach the other learning areas (the Arts, Technologies, Health and Physical Educations, Humanties and Social Sciences and Languages) described in the former Western Australian Curriculum Framework until advised by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority.
